As a college journalism professor, I always teach my students to tell the stories nobody else will tell. Show the photos and video nobody will show. Give voice to the voiceless. Show what's possible. Avoid the pack, and make a difference.

 

Help people to think differently, more positively, and change behaviors. Shape lives and communities for the better. No other media platform enjoys a higher level of trust to achieve this than Public Television. That's why much of our content broadcasts on PBS.

Maintaining that trust level is at the core of our work. Pedal4Life understands that public television programming remains essential to our nation's discourse and future.

 

With recent Congressional actions to defund public media, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting stands to lose $1.1 billion in funding. This places many of the 350 or so PBS stations and 1,500 public media stations across the country at risk of ending programming that prepares young people for school and entertains, educates, and enriches the lives of 36 million viewers a month and more than 53 million monthly viewers on its digital sites and YouTube.

PBS stations rely on independent producers like me to fully fund our own projects and pay into a presenting PBS station such as WTTW, in Chicago; WGBH, in Boston; and KQED, in San Francisco. When Pedal4Life pays a ‘Presenting station’ fee, we help public television station employees keep their jobs. 

 

The station then distributes our content nationally through American Public Television (APT) or the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA), and that helps more people to keep their jobs.
